INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION IS THE LARGEST MAN MADE STRUCTURE IN THE SPACE. IT WAS BUILD UP IN PIECES AND THEN LAUNCHED INTO SPACE WHICH WAS LATER ASSEMBLED INTO ORBIT. THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION OR ISS TOOK MANY YEARS TO BECOME A REALITY. IN 1984 THE UNITED STATE STARTS THE PROJECT CALLED “SPACE STATION FREEDOM” HERE IS THAT DRAWING HOW ORIGINAL STATION MIGHT LOOK LIKE. IT WAS NEVER ACTUALLY BUILD IN IT IS ORIGINAL FORM. THERE IS LOT OF REDESIGNING AND ITS FUNDING IS ALMOST CUT BY UNITED STATE CONGRESS.

YEAR 1993

THEN IN 1993 AFTER SEVERAL YEARS OTHER COUNTRIES ONBOARD. THEN NAME WAS OFFICIALLY CHANGED AS INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. FIVE YEAR LATER CONSTRUCTION BEGINS IN SPACE. ISS USUALLY USED TO CONDUCT SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS. THAT CAN BE ONLY DONE IN SPACE. THERE IS USUALLY 6 ASTRONAUTS ON SPACE STATION. THEY GENERALLY SWITCH OUT SO THAT NO ONE SPEND EXTRA TIME IN SPACE.

THE STATION IS ABOUT THE SIZE OF AMERICAN FOOTBALL FIELD. IT IS LOCATED OUTSIDE THE EARTH’S ATMOSPHERE. THIS IS KNOWN AS LOWER ATMOSPHERE. ISS JUST TAKE 92 MINUTES TO ORBIT AROUND THE EARTH. IT IS ABOUT 28000 KM PER HOUR. OVER TIME THE ISS WAS SLOW AND LOSE ALTITUDE IF NOTHING WAS DONE. IT MIGHT BURN UP IF REENTERS THE EARTH’S ATMOSPHERE. TO PREVENT THIS THE STATION MUST BE PERIODICALLY BOASTED SO THAT IT STAY IN SPACE.

UNITED STATE OF AMERICA
CANADA
RUSSIA
JAPAN
AND MANY COUNTRY FROM EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY.

PARTS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION

HERE IS INSIGHT TO SOME MAIN PARTS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION.
THE INTEGRATED TRUSS STRUCTURE KIND OF LIKE A BACKBONE OF THE STATION. IT HOLDS THE SOLAR PANELS TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY, RADIATOR PANELS THEY REMOVE HEAT FROM THE STATION AND OTHER TYPES OF EQUIPMENT AND SCIENCE EXPERIMENT ARE ALSO ATTACHED. THE DIFFERENT PIECES OF THE STATION ARE BUILD IN MANY LOCATION AROUND THE GLOBE.

EACH MODULE IS THEN LAUNCHED INTO SPACE BY ONE OF THESE THREE ROCKETS:

  • THE AMERICAN SPACE SHUTTLE
  • THE RUSSIAN PROTON ROCKET
  • THE RUSSIAN SOYUZ ROCKET

LET US START FROM THE BEGINNING, FIRST PIECE OF RUSSIAN MODULE CALLED ZARYA. IT PROVIDE POWER FROM SOLAR RAYS AND ALSO PROPULSION WHEN THERE IS NEED TO MOVE THE STATION. THERE IS THREE DOCKING PODS IN FRONT AND ONE IN BACK. IT IS USED TO CONNECT NEXT PIECES OF THE STATION. THE SECOND MODULE IS AMERICAN AND IT IS CALLED UNITY OR NODE1. IT HAS SIX DOCKING PODS TO CONNECT TO FUTURE MODULES. THERE IS SPECIAL PIECE TO CONNECT TWO MODULE THIS IS KNOWN AS PRESSURIZED MATING ADOPTER (PMA). UNITY WAS LAUNCHED WITH PMA1 AND PMA2.

NEXT IS ZVEZDA SERVICE MODULE IT PROVIDES THE LIFE SUPPORT AND IT CONSIDERED FUNCTIONAL MODULE OF RUSSIAN ORBITAL SEGMENT. IT ALSO HAVE 3 DOCKING PODS IN FRONT AND 1 IN BACK. NEXT IS Z1 TRUSS THIS WAS THE EQUIPMENT FOR THE STATION IT IS NOT PART OF THE MAIN TRUSS BUT PROVIDE TEMPORARY MOUNTING PLACE. THE P6 TRUSS WAS TEMPORARILY MOUNTED ON THE TOP OF Z1 TRUST. THIS INCLUDE FIRST SOLAR WINGS AND THESE PROVIDE POWER TO INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. RADIATOR PANNEL IS ALSO INSTALLED TO REMOVE EXCESS HEAT FROM THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. AT THIS POINT THERE IS ENOUGH FACILITY THAT ASTRONAUTS CAN START LIVING ON THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION INSTEAD OF JUST PAYING A TEMPORARY VISIT. FROM NOVEMBER 2000 NOW THERE HAS BEEN CONTINUES HUMAN PRESENCE ON BOARD.

THE DESTINY MODEL ALSO CALLED “US LABORATORY” THIS IS THE PLACE WHERE LOT OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH HAPPENS. MARCH 2001 ESP1 (EXTERNAL STORAGE PLATFORM 1) THIS USED TO STORE SPARE PARTS FOR THE STATION. CANADA MADE THE VITAL CONTRIBUTION WITH THE CANADARM2 SSRMS ( SPACE STATION REMOTE MANIPULATOR SYSTEM) IT IS A ROBOTIC ARM THAT CAN HELP AROUND AND OUTSIDE THE STATION. IT IS USUALLY CONTROLLED BY ASTRONAUT WHO IS INSIDE THE STATION. THE QUEST JOINT AIRLOCK ALLOW ASTRONAUT TO STEP OUT FOR FEW HOURS TO PERFORM AN EVA (EXTRAVEHICULAR ACTIVITY) ALSO KNOWN AS SPACE WALK.

NEXT IS RUSSIAN MODEL CALLED PIRS (DOCKING COMPNENT1) USED AS AIRLOCK FOR SPACEWALK OR AS DOCKING POT TO ALLOW VISITING SPACECRAFT TO STATION. NOW IT IS TIME TO START BUILDING THE INTEGRATED TRUSS STRUCTURE OUR FIRST PIECE S0 TRUST ATTACHED TO THE TOP OF THE DESTINY MODEL. THE MOBILE REMOTE SERVICER BASE SYSTEM OR MBS WAS ADDED NEXT THIS PLATFORM CAN MOVE ALONG THE TRUST. IT IS SPECIALLY USEFUL WHEN CANADARM2 WAS ATTACHED THEN S1 TRUST WAS ADDED FOLLOWED BY P1 TRUSS S STANDS FOR STARBOARD SIDE AND P STANDS FOR PORT SIDE THIS WAY WE CAN KNOW WHICH SIDE OF STATION WE ARE. EACH SIDE IS HAVING ROOM FOR 3 MORE RADIATOR PANNELS. FOR NOW, ONLY THE CENTRE WAS INSTALLED. ESP2 WAS ADDED TO THE RIGHT NEXT TO THE QUEST AIRLOCK.

NOW NEXT IS P3/P4 TRUSS SEGMENT WITH SOLAR RAYS AND ANOTHER RADIATOR PANNEL. THE TINY P5 GOES AT THE END. TO BALANCE OUT THE STATION WE HAVE TO RETRACT THE FEW PANNELS. THE FOLLOWING OTHER SIDE OF TRUSS PANEL IS ADDED AS WELL.

THE HARMONY MODEL ALSO CALLED NODE2 IT WOULD BE ATTACHED FORWARD END OF DESTINY. NEXT, COMES THE COLUMBUS MODEL WHICH IS THE EUROPEAN LABORATORY NOW WE GET SOME MORE ROBOTICS ALSO BUILD BY CANADA. DEXTRE(SPECIAL PURPOSE DEXTEROUS MANIPULATOR) IS SPACE ROBOT BUILD BY CANADA IT CAN ATTACH SAME PODS WHERE CANADARM2 IS ATTACHED IN FACT IT IS MORE USEFUL IF WE ATTACH DEXTRE AT END OF CANADARM2.

THE LARGEST MODULE IS JAPANESE EXPERIMENT MODULE ALSO KNOWN AS KIBO. IT COME UP TO THE STATION INTO SEVERAL PIECES. IT IS HAVING OWN ROBOTIC ARM. FINALLY, WE ARE HAVING S6 TRUSS THE LAST OF THE TRUSS SEGMENT NOW ISS START’S LOOKING LIKE SPACE STATION. THE JAPNESE EXPERIMENT MODEL IS HAVING ONE LAST SEGMENT IT IS CALLED THE JAPANESE EXPOSED FACILITY. THIS ALLOW RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED IN VACUUM OF SPACE. THE RUSSIAN MODEL POISK(MINI RESEARCH MODULE) IS VERY SIMILAR TO PIRS THIS WAS ANOTHER PLACE FOR RUSSIAN SPACECRAFT DOCK.

NEXT IS (EXPRESS FIRST LOGIST CARRIER) OR ELC1 THIS PLACE TO STORE HARDWARE TO HELP THE STATION WORK CORRECTLY. ELC2 WAS INSTALLED ON THE TOP OF THE TRUSS. THE TRANQUILITY MODEL ALSO KNOWN AS NODE3 ADDED AT THE SITE OF UNITY AND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE UNITY THERE IS SMALL ROOM CALLED CUPOLA. THERE IS SEVEN WINDOW FROM WHICH YOU CAN SEE VIEW EACH WINDOW IS HAVING COVER TO CLOSE WHEN THEY ARE NOT IN USE.

THEN COME ANOTHER RUSSIAN MODULE CALLED RASSVET (MINI RESEARCH MODULE-1)(MRM-1) THIS WAS USED FOR STORAGE AND ANOTHER DOCKING PODE. THE LEONARDO MODEL IS USED FOR STORAGE FOR SUPPLIES AND WASTE. NEXT IS ELC3 AND EC4 9EXPRESS LOGISTIC CARRIER). NEXT IS SCIENCE EXPERIMENT CALLED ALPHA MAGNETIC SPECTROMETER (AMS-2). RECENT ADDITION TO THE STATION IS BIGELOW EXPANDABLE ACTIVITY MODULE OR BEAM FOR SHORT. INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION IS HAVING FUNDING FROM 2005 BUT HOPEFULLY, THAT WOULD BE EXPANDED.
